Anzac Hill offers the finest panoramic views of Alice Springs and the surrounding MacDonnell Ranges. This small hilltop, crowned with a war memorial, is a must-visit for first-time visitors and photographers. The short, steep walk to the summit is rewarded with a sweeping vista that stretches from the town to the distant red ranges, especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- War Memorial: The stone obelisk commemorates Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served in World War I. The site is also used for Anzac Day services.
- Panoramic Views: From the top, you can see the entire Alice Springs township, the Todd River (usually dry), and the majestic MacDonnell Ranges stretching east and west.
- Sunrise & Sunset: The hill is a prime spot for watching the sky change colours over the desert landscape. Bring your camera.
- Interpretive Signage: Learn about the history of the area, including the original inhabitants, the Arrernte people, and the early European settlement.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for the visit. The walk up takes about 10-15 minutes at a steady pace, and you'll want to linger at the top to soak in the views. It's best done early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light. Combine with a stroll through the nearby town centre or a visit to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station.
