Sea Cliff Bridge is a stunning coastal drive that clings to the escarpment just north of Wollongong, offering one of New South Wales' most exhilarating road experiences. This 665-metre bridge curves around the Illawarra cliffs, with the Tasman Sea crashing below on one side and lush rainforest on the other. It's a highlight of the Grand Pacific Drive and a must-do for anyone exploring the South Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Walkway: Park at the northern or southern end and walk the bridge's pedestrian path to soak in panoramic ocean views and watch for whales during migration season (May–November).
- Photography at Sunset: The bridge is spectacular in golden hour light, with the curved structure leading the eye out to the sea. Bring a wide-angle lens.
- Lookout Points: Several informal pull-offs and the nearby Bald Hill lookout offer elevated perspectives of the bridge and coastline.
- Grand Pacific Drive: The bridge is the scenic centrepiece of this 140-kilometre route between Sydney and Wollongong, which also passes through the Royal National Park.
- Nearby Beaches: Combine a visit with a swim or surf at Stanwell Park Beach or the quieter Coalcliff Beach, just minutes away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour if you just want to drive across and stop for photos, but plan for 1–2 hours if you walk the bridge and explore the adjacent lookouts. The bridge is often included in a half-day loop from Wollongong or as a stop on the drive between Sydney and the South Coast. Mornings are less crowded, while late afternoons offer the best light.
