Stretching from the southern fringe of Sydney down to the lush escarpments and wild coastline of the South Coast, the Illawarra region is a stunning blend of dramatic sea cliffs, rainforest waterfalls, and laid-back surf culture. Centred on Wollongong, this area offers a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, multicultural dining, and surprising cultural gems, all framed by the Pacific Ocean and the green Illawarra Escarpment.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Base yourself in Wollongong for at least three days to explore the region properly: spend a day driving the Grand Pacific Drive including Sea Cliff Bridge and stopping at coastal towns; a day hiking in the escarpment and visiting Nan Tien Temple; and a third day for Kiama and the south coast beaches. If you’re on a road trip between Sydney and the South Coast, one full day allows a highlights tour, but you’ll wish you had longer.
