Garawarra Farm Carpark is the gateway to the southern end of the magnificent Royal National Park, offering walkers and nature lovers a quiet, uncrowded launchpad into one of Australia’s oldest and most dramatic coastal parks. Tucked away in the rural outskirts of Wollongong, this unsealed carpark sits at the edge of the Illawarra escarpment, where the scent of eucalyptus mingles with salt air. It’s the kind of place that feels a world away from the city – a starting point for epic coastal walks, rainforest gullies, and sweeping ocean views.
Highlights & What to See
- Coast Track Access: This is the southern trailhead for the famous 26-km Royal National Park Coast Track. Even a short walk north from here reveals stunning clifftop panoramas, whale-watching lookouts (May–November), and the chance to spot sea eagles and wallabies.
- Garie Beach: A 30-minute walk north along the coast leads to Garie Beach, a patrolled surf beach with a kiosk, picnic tables, and excellent swimming. It’s a perfect reward for a morning’s hike.
- Rainforest Walks: Head inland on the Garawarra Ridge or Lady Carrington Drive trails, where you’ll wander through towering cabbage tree palms, tree ferns, and subtropical rainforest – a cool, green escape from the coastal sun.
- Birdwatching & Wildflowers: The heathlands and woodlands around the carpark burst into colour with spring wildflowers (August–October) and are home to lyrebirds, rosellas, and honeyeaters.
- Sunset Views: From the escarpment edge just north of the carpark, you can watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea, with the rock platforms below catching golden light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors use the Garawarra Farm Carpark as a starting point for a day walk. For a half-day outing (2–4 hours), walk north to Garie Beach and back, allowing time for a swim or picnic. If you’re tackling a longer section of the Coast Track, plan for 5–7 hours to reach Bundeena or Otford. The carpark itself requires only a quick stop to orient yourself – the real magic begins when you step onto the trail.
