Stretching along the dramatic Illawarra Escarpment between the Royal National Park and the ocean, the Coast Track is a world-class coastal walk that delivers non-stop ocean views, rainforest pockets, and the kind of raw beauty that makes you forget you're only an hour from Sydney. This 26 km point-to-point trail is less crowded than its northern neighbour, the Bondi to Coogee walk, and rewards hikers with sea cliffs, blowholes, and hidden beaches that feel a world away from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Sea Cliff Bridge: This iconic cantilevered bridge clings to the cliffs just north of the track's start — walk or drive over it for heart-stopping views of the ocean crashing below.
- Figure Eight Pools: A natural rock formation that creates figure-eight shaped tidal pools (only accessible at low tide and with caution).
- Burning Palms Beach: A remote, clothing-optional beach nestled in a lush valley, accessible via a steep but scenic descent.
- Garie Beach: A patrolled surf beach with a classic rockpool, perfect for a mid-walk swim or picnic.
- Eagle Rock Lookout: A short detour to a dramatic viewpoint over the ocean and the escarpment.
- Rainforest Sections: The track passes through pockets of subtropical rainforest, with towering palms and the sound of bellbirds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers tackle the Coast Track as a full-day hike (6–8 hours), starting from either Bundeena (north) or Otford (south). For a more relaxed experience, break it into two days with an overnight stay at one of the coastal campgrounds (book ahead). Alternatively, walk a shorter section — the 5 km stretch from Stanwell Park to the Sea Cliff Bridge is a popular half-day option with spectacular views and minimal elevation gain.
