Woodburn is a sleepy riverside hamlet on the banks of the Evans River, just a short drive from the more famous coastal hubs of the Northern Rivers region. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, breathe in the salty air, and watch pelicans glide past working fishing boats. For travellers self-driving between Sydney and Byron Bay, Woodburn makes a refreshingly un-touristy stop to stretch legs, grab a coffee, and soak up a slice of authentic river life.
Highlights & What to See
- Evans River waterfront – The heart of Woodburn. Stroll along the foreshore, watch local fishermen haul in their catch, and keep an eye out for dolphins and sea eagles.
- Woodburn Riverside Holiday Park – Even if you’re not staying, the park offers a lovely picnic area with river views, a boat ramp, and a great spot for a paddle.
- Historic Woodburn Bridge – A classic timber truss bridge spanning the Evans River, perfect for a photo stop and a glimpse into the area’s past.
- Local fishing culture – Woodburn is a working fishing village. Chat with locals at the boat ramp or grab fresh prawns from the co-op when in season.
- Nearby Broadwater National Park – Just north, this park protects coastal heath and offers short walks to stunning, empty beaches like South Beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Woodburn is best treated as a brief stopover rather than a destination in itself. Allow one to two hours to wander the riverfront, grab a bite at the local bakery or pub, and perhaps take a short walk. If you’re camping or fishing, you could easily while away half a day. Most travellers combine it with a visit to nearby Evans Head or Ballina.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Ballina – 25 minutes north, offering the Big Prawn, historic Richmond River, and excellent whale-watching in season.
- Broadwater National Park – Right next door, with coastal walks, birdwatching, and near-empty beaches.
- Richmond River – Follow the river south to Coraki or north to Ballina for more river scenery and historic towns.
- Byron Bay – About 45 minutes north, the iconic surf town with its lighthouse, beaches, and vibrant food scene.
