Wollumbin National Park, dominated by the ancient volcanic plug of Mount Warning (Wollumbin), is a sacred site for the Bundjalung people and a haven for rainforest hiking. The summit track offers one of Australia’s most rewarding dawn experiences, while the surrounding subtropical lowlands are rich in birdlife and dramatic landscapes. This is a place where culture, geology, and wilderness converge.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Warning Summit Walk – A steep, 4.4 km return climb through palm groves and boulder fields to the summit, where you can be the first in Australia to see the sunrise. The panoramic views over the Tweed Valley and out to the coast are unforgettable.
- Lyrebird Lookout – A shorter, family-friendly walk offering sweeping views across the caldera and a chance to hear the superb lyrebird’s mimicry.
- Ancient Antarctic Beech Trees – Spot these prehistoric trees along the summit track, remnants of Gondwanan rainforests that once covered the continent.
- Bundjalung Cultural Significance – Wollumbin is a place of great spiritual importance; respect the site by not climbing the peak (it is considered sacred), and instead enjoy the interpretive signs at the base.
- Birdwatching – Look for wompoo fruit-doves, paradise riflebirds, and the elusive Albert’s lyrebird in the dense rainforest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to the park. For the summit walk, start before dawn (allow 4–5 hours return) to catch the sunrise. If you’re not climbing, a couple of hours at Lyrebird Lookout and the park’s picnic areas is enough. Combine with a morning at the nearby Tweed Valley for a full day’s adventure.
