Port Stephens may be famed for its sparkling waters and sand dunes, but the hinterland is quietly producing some excellent cool-climate wines. The region's vineyards, many family-run, specialise in Semillon, Verdelho, and Shiraz, with a handful of cellar doors offering tastings with a view over vine-covered hills. The experience here is refreshingly low-key – no crowds, just passionate vignerons happy to share their craft.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray's Vineyard – A boutique operation known for its elegant Semillon and a welcoming cellar door where you can picnic among the vines.
- Broke Fordwich Wine Region – Just a 30-minute drive from Port Stephens, this cluster of wineries includes De Bortoli Wines and Margan Family Winegrowers, both with excellent tastings and restaurants.
- Ironbark Hill Brewhouse – While not a winery, this craft brewery also offers tastings of local wines and ciders in a rustic setting.
- Hunter Valley Wine School – For a deeper dive, join a guided tasting class that covers the region's history and wine styles.
- Stockton Sand Dunes Wine Tour – Combine a 4WD adventure across the dunes with stops at two or three cellar doors for a unique Port Stephens experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day wine tasting excursion is ideal – start mid-morning, visit three or four cellar doors, and enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the winery restaurants. If you're keen to explore the Broke Fordwich region, allow a full day, adding a stop at the historic village of Wollombi for a counter lunch. Most tastings take about 30–45 minutes per venue, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water between stops.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
