Perched high on the edge of an ancient volcanic caldera, the Tweed Rim Walk offers hikers some of the most dramatic and sweeping views in northern New South Wales. This challenging but rewarding trail winds through subtropical rainforest, past cascading waterfalls and over rocky outcrops, with constant glimpses of the vast caldera floor, the distant coast, and on clear days, the Gold Coast skyline. It's a must-do for adventurous travellers seeking an immersive wilderness experience within easy reach of Byron Bay and the Gold Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Bar Mountain Lookout: The walk's ultimate payoff – a 360-degree panorama over the entire Tweed Valley, Wollumbin (Mount Warning), and the Pacific Ocean. Sunrise here is unforgettable.
- Antarctic Beech Trees: Ancient, moss-draped trees that are relics from Gondwana. Walking among them feels like stepping back in time.
- Brindle Creek & Waterfalls: A lush section where the trail crosses crystal-clear creeks and passes several pretty waterfalls, perfect for a cool dip on a hot day.
- Subtropical Rainforest: The trail weaves through dense, bird-filled forest with towering palms, strangler figs, and colourful fungi. Keep an eye out for pademelons and lyrebirds.
- Border Ranges National Park: The walk lies within this World Heritage-listed park, offering a true wilderness experience with excellent camping and picnic spots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers tackle the full 22 km loop in one long day – allow 7–9 hours for a steady pace with stops. Start early to avoid afternoon heat and to catch the best light. If you prefer a shorter outing, the walk can be broken into sections: the 12 km southern section from Bar Mountain to Brindle Creek takes 4–5 hours, while the northern section is more demanding. Consider camping overnight at one of the park's basic sites to split the walk into two days and fully soak in the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mount Warning (Wollumbin): Just south, this iconic peak offers a sunrise climb with views over the caldera and coast – a classic companion to the rim walk.
- Byron Bay: About an hour's drive east, Byron's beaches, lighthouse, and vibrant café scene provide a perfect coastal contrast after your rainforest hike.
- Gold Coast Hinterland: The nearby Springbrook and Lamington national parks offer more spectacular walks, waterfalls, and lookouts – ideal for extending your nature itinerary.
- Nightcap National Park: Home to the famous Minyon Falls and Protesters Falls, with great swimming holes and forest trails.
- Murwillumbah: A charming historic town on the Tweed River with galleries, markets, and excellent local produce – a good stop for supplies or a post-walk meal.
