Tomaree Head Summit Walk
Tomaree Head Summit Walk is a short but exhilarating coastal hike near Nelson Bay that rewards you with one of the most spectacular panoramic views on the New South Wales coast. The 2.2-kilometre return walk climbs steadily through coastal heath and windswept rock formations, culminating at a WWII gun emplacement lookout perched high above the Pacific. On a clear day you can see from the distant lighthouse at Port Stephens’ entrance to the vast blue horizon and the offshore islands of the Port Stephens–Great Lakes Marine Park. This is a must-do for anyone visiting the region – the view is genuinely breathtaking.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit lookout: The 360-degree panorama from the top takes in Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, and the rugged coastline stretching south to Stockton Beach. Look for whales during migration season (June–November).
- WWII history: The walk passes remnants of a coastal defence battery, including gun emplacements and a concrete observation post that was part of Australia’s wartime defences.
- Dramatic rock formations: The trail winds through sculpted sandstone outcrops and heathland, with wildflowers in spring adding splashes of colour.
- Fingal Island & Point Stephens Lighthouse: From the summit you can see the historic lighthouse on Fingal Island, accessible only by boat or at low tide via a sandbar (check local tides).
- Sunrise or sunset: The walk is popular at dawn and dusk when the golden light paints the ocean and headland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for the return walk, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The trail is steep in sections but well-maintained, and the short distance makes it easy to fit into a morning or afternoon. Combine with a swim at nearby Shoal Bay or a coastal drive to Fingal Bay for a half-day outing. Arrive early to avoid crowds and secure parking – the small carpark fills quickly, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
