On the quiet Tilligerry Peninsula, this community-run nature reserve is a haven for wildlife and a peaceful escape from Port Stephens’ busier beaches. Wandering the boardwalks through melaleuca wetlands and eucalypt forest, you’ll likely spot kangaroos grazing at dawn, koalas dozing in the forks of trees, and a dazzling array of birds. The reserve’s passionate volunteers have created a series of easy, well-signed trails that immerse you in the landscape without disturbing its resident animals. It’s one of the most rewarding places in the region for a low-impact, genuinely wild experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Koala spotting – Tilligerry Habitat is one of the best places in Port Stephens to see koalas in the wild; scan the treetops along the Koala Track.
- Boardwalk & bird hide – The elevated boardwalk weaves through paperbark swamp, leading to a bird hide where you can watch herons, kingfishers and swamphens.
- Kangaroo encounters – Eastern grey kangaroos often graze on the open grassy areas near the entrance, especially in the late afternoon.
- Aboriginal cultural insights – Interpretive signs along the trails share the stories and traditional uses of plants by the Worimi people.
- Seasonal wildflowers – Spring brings a carpet of native orchids, wattles and flannel flowers along the forest edges.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to explore the main trails at a leisurely pace – the full circuit is only about 2 km. If you’re keen on birdwatching or hoping to spot koalas, plan for an early morning or late afternoon visit when wildlife is most active. The reserve is small enough to slot into a half-day itinerary, perhaps after a morning at nearby Fingal Bay or before heading to Nelson Bay for lunch.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
