The Southern Great Barrier Reef offers a more intimate, uncrowded encounter with the world’s largest coral reef system. Stretching from the Capricorn Coast to the Town of 1770, this region is a haven for snorkellers, divers, and nature lovers seeking pristine coral gardens, abundant marine life, and laid-back coastal vibes. Unlike its northern counterpart, the Southern Great Barrier Reef is easily accessible from the mainland, with islands like Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave offering day trips or overnight stays. The small towns of Agnes Water, 1770, and Yeppoon serve as gateways, blending beachside charm with a genuine sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Lady Elliot Island – A coral cay renowned for its manta rays, sea turtles, and vibrant coral; snorkel straight off the beach or join a guided reef walk.
- Lady Musgrave Island – A pristine coral cay with a protected lagoon, perfect for snorkelling and glass-bottom boat tours; spot turtles, rays, and colourful fish.
- Great Keppel Island – Fringed by 17 white-sand beaches, this island offers excellent snorkelling, bushwalking, and a relaxed resort vibe.
- Heron Island – A world-class dive site with access to the Wistari Reef; known for its research station and seasonal turtle nesting.
- Capricorn Caves – A network of limestone caves on the mainland near Rockhampton, offering guided tours through cathedral-like chambers and rock formations.

Suggested Time to Spend
For a rewarding experience, allow at least three to four days to explore the Southern Great Barrier Reef. This gives you time for a day trip to one of the outer islands (Lady Elliot or Lady Musgrave), a day on Great Keppel Island, and a day exploring the mainland’s coastal towns and national parks. If you’re a keen diver or want to visit multiple islands, extend to five or six days. The region is best visited between June and October when water visibility is at its peak and whale migration is underway.
