Perched on a dramatic headland within Hat Head National Park, Smoky Cape Lighthouse is one of New South Wales' most photogenic and historically rich lighthouses. Built in 1891 and still operational, it offers sweeping coastal views that stretch from South West Rocks to the distant mountains, and is a perfect stop for history buffs, hikers, and anyone chasing a classic Aussie coastal panorama.
Highlights & What to See
- Climb the lighthouse tower for a bird's-eye view of the rugged coastline and the turquoise waters of the Pacific – the 360-degree panorama is unforgettable.
- Walk the Smoky Cape Lighthouse Walking Track, a short but steep 1.2 km loop that winds through coastal heath and offers excellent whale-watching opportunities (May–November).
- Explore the historic lighthouse keepers' cottages (now holiday rentals) and the small museum inside the base of the tower, which details the site's maritime past.
- Spot dolphins and sea eagles from the clifftop lookout, or bring binoculars for a chance to see migrating humpback whales breaching offshore.
- Visit nearby Arakoon National Park and Trial Bay Gaol, a historic prison ruin right on the beach, just a short drive away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1–2 hours to climb the tower, walk the track, and soak in the views. If you're staying in South West Rocks, you can easily combine it with a morning at the beach or a picnic lunch on the headland. For a more immersive experience, book one of the lighthouse cottages and watch the sunset from your own private balcony – it's a magical way to spend a night.
