Sea Cliff Bridge is a stunning coastal drive and walk that clings to the dramatic Illawarra escarpment just north of Wollongong. This 665-metre-long bridge, opened in 2005, replaced a notoriously unstable section of Lawrence Hargrave Drive and offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and the lush rainforest of the Illawarra region. Whether you're driving, cycling, or walking, the bridge is a must-see for its engineering marvel and the raw beauty of the coastline.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Walkway: A dedicated pedestrian path runs the length of the bridge, allowing you to stop and take in the panoramic ocean views, watch for whales (May–November), and feel the sea breeze.
- Lookout Points: At the northern end, there's a small carpark and lookout with benches – perfect for a picnic with a view of the bridge curving around the cliff.
- Photography: The bridge is a favourite spot for photographers, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light paints the cliffs and ocean in golden hues.
- Nearby Rock Platforms: Just south of the bridge, you can explore the rock platforms at low tide – keep an eye out for rock pools and sea life.
- Scenic Drive: The approach from either direction is gorgeous, winding through rainforest-clad hills before the bridge suddenly reveals the vast ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can comfortably enjoy the bridge in 30–45 minutes if you're just stopping for photos and a short walk. For a more relaxed experience, allow 1–2 hours to walk the full length of the bridge, explore the northern lookout, and perhaps have a coffee at a nearby café in Coalcliff or Clifton. If you're planning to combine it with a walk in the nearby rainforest or a visit to Stanwell Park, set aside half a day.
