Just north of Noosa, the Noosa Everglades offer a unique wilderness experience unlike any other in Australia. This pristine network of freshwater creeks and wetlands is one of only two everglades systems in the world, the other being the Florida Everglades. Paddle through mirror-still waters lined with ancient paperbark trees and spot diverse birdlife. It's a serene escape from the coastal crowds and a highlight for nature lovers.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayak or canoe through the Upper Noosa River – glide along glassy waters reflecting the surrounding forest; guided tours are available for all skill levels.
- Spot wildlife – look for eastern grey kangaroos, lace monitors, and over 200 bird species including white-bellied sea eagles and kingfishers.
- Hike the Kinaba Day Use Area boardwalk – a short walk through melaleuca wetlands with interpretive signs explaining the ecosystem.
- Visit Harry's Hut – a historic timber hut from the 1950s, accessible by foot or canoe, offering a glimpse into the area's logging past.
- Take a scenic flight or cruise – see the everglades from above on a light plane or join a guided boat tour for a different perspective.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to truly immerse yourself in the everglades. A half-day kayak trip (3–4 hours) covers the highlights, but you can easily spend a full day paddling, hiking, and picnicking. For a relaxed pace, combine a morning paddle with an afternoon walk and a stop at the Everglades Eco Camp. If you're short on time, a 2-hour cruise still gives you a taste of the scenery.
