Moreton Island

Moreton Island, a sand island paradise just off the coast of Brisbane, is a world away from the city's hustle. With its towering sand dunes, crystal-clear lagoons, and shipwrecks teeming with marine life, this national park offers a raw, untamed escape. Accessible only by ferry or private boat, the island invites you to explore its wild beauty—whether you're sandboarding down the desert-like dunes, snorkelling around the historic Tangalooma Wrecks, or simply soaking up the solitude on a pristine beach.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come for a day trip, which is enough to experience sandboarding, snorkelling at the wrecks, and a quick hike. However, to truly appreciate the island's wilderness, stay overnight at one of the campgrounds or eco-resorts. Two to three days allows you to explore the eastern beaches, hike to Mount Tempest, and enjoy a relaxed pace. If you're self-driving, note that a 4WD is essential—the island's sandy tracks are challenging but part of the adventure.
