Rising from the Tasman Sea 9 km off the coast of Narooma, Montague Island Nature Reserve is a wild, windswept sanctuary that feels a world away from the mainland. This 82-hectare island is one of NSW's most significant seabird and seal colonies, home to a historic lighthouse and some of Australia's most accessible wildlife encounters. The only way to visit is on a guided tour, which adds a sense of adventure and ensures minimal disturbance to the thriving ecosystem.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal & seabird colonies: The island hosts a massive colony of Australian and New Zealand fur seals, plus little penguins, shearwaters, and the rare white-bellied sea eagle. Guided tours take you to viewing platforms for close-up looks without disturbing the animals.
- Historic Montague Island Lighthouse: Built in 1881, the granite lighthouse still operates and offers spectacular 360-degree views. Tours include the keeper's quarters and engine room, with stories of shipwrecks and isolation.
- Snorkelling & diving: The clear waters around the island are a marine reserve, teeming with fish, rays, and grey nurse sharks. Several operators run snorkel and dive trips from Narooma, often with seal encounters.
- Whale watching (May–November): Humpback and southern right whales pass close to the island on their annual migration, and the elevated lighthouse platform is one of the best vantage points on the south coast.
- Guided overnight stays: For a truly immersive experience, book an overnight stay in the restored lighthouse keeper's cottage – you'll have the island to yourself after day-trippers leave, with penguin parades at dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most day tours from Narooma run about 4–5 hours, including boat transfer and a guided walk on the island (roughly 2 hours ashore). That's enough to see the lighthouse, seal colonies, and take in the views. For divers and snorkellers, allow a full day with a dedicated trip. Overnight stays are a once-in-a-lifetime option and require at least 24 hours – book well ahead through the National Parks & Wildlife Service.
