Minnamurra Rainforest, part of the Budderoo National Park on the South Coast of New South Wales, is a lush, ancient world of towering tree ferns, vine-draped palms and the constant soundtrack of birdsong and cascading water. This pocket of subtropical and warm-temperate rainforest feels a world away from the coast, yet it's just a short drive inland from Kiama and the seaside towns of the Illawarra. The centrepiece is a spectacular elevated walkway that takes you through the forest canopy and past the powerful Minnamurra Falls — a must for nature lovers, walkers and anyone craving a deep dose of green.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Rainforest Loop Walk — a 2.6 km sealed track that's accessible to most fitness levels, leading through dense rainforest and alongside the creek to the base of the falls.
- Minnamurra Falls — a two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep pool; best viewed from the lower lookout after rain, when the flow is strongest.
- Canopy Boardwalk — a suspended walkway that rises 20 metres above the forest floor, offering a bird's-eye view of the tree ferns and the chance to spot lyrebirds, satin bowerbirds and crimson rosellas.
- Warris Chair — a short, steep side track (about 20 minutes return) to a natural stone seat with panoramic views over the forest canopy and out to the coast.
- Picnic & Barbecue Areas — well-maintained spots near the visitor centre, perfect for a lunch break surrounded by the sound of the creek.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2–3 hours to comfortably complete the loop walk, explore the boardwalk and enjoy the falls. If you're keen on photography or birdwatching, or want to add the Warris Chair detour, budget a half-day. The rainforest is at its most atmospheric in the morning, when the light filters through the canopy and the birdlife is most active. Combine it with a coastal stop in Kiama or a drive along the Grand Pacific Drive for a full day out from Sydney or Wollongong.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kiama — famous for the Kiama Blowhole, lovely beaches and a relaxed seaside vibe, just 15 minutes south.
- Jamberoo — a historic village with a pub and the popular Jamberoo Action Park; also the start of the Jamberoo Mountain Pass, a scenic drive.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park — a stunning stretch of unspoiled coastline with walking trails and birdlife, 20 minutes south.
- Kangaroo Valley — a charming hinterland town with the historic Hampden Bridge, canoeing on the river and bushwalks, about 45 minutes west.
- Sydney — the rainforest makes an excellent day trip from the city (about 1.5 hours drive), or a stop on a road trip down the coast.
