Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Perched on the Blackall Range escarpment, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest that feels a world away from the coast. The reserve's centrepiece is a gently graded 1.7 km rainforest circuit boardwalk, which winds through towering piccabeen palms, strangler figs and giant brush box trees. On a clear day, the viewing platform offers a sweeping panorama from the Glass House Mountains to Moreton Bay. This is a place for slow, contemplative walking — listen for the whipbird's call and the rustle of pademelons in the undergrowth.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours here — enough time to walk the boardwalk, enjoy the lookout and grab a coffee at the cafe. If you're a keen birder or photographer, allow 2–3 hours to explore the quieter edges of the reserve. The circuit is short but rich in detail; there's no need to rush. Combine it with a morning at nearby Maleny or Montville for a full day in the hinterland.
