Perched on the Blackall Range escarpment, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest that feels a world away from the coast. The reserve's centrepiece is a gently graded 1.7 km rainforest circuit boardwalk, which winds through towering piccabeen palms, strangler figs and giant brush box trees. On a clear day, the viewing platform offers a sweeping panorama from the Glass House Mountains to Moreton Bay. This is a place for slow, contemplative walking — listen for the whipbird's call and the rustle of pademelons in the undergrowth.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainforest Circuit Boardwalk: An accessible, wheelchair-friendly loop that takes you deep into the heart of the reserve. Allow 30–45 minutes to amble, stopping at interpretive signs that explain the forest's ecology.
- Lookout Platform: The star attraction — a wide deck with benches facing the Glass House Mountains. Best visited in the early morning for soft light and fewer crowds.
- Mary Cairncross Cafe: A bright, airy cafe with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the forest canopy. The menu focuses on local produce; the scones with jam and cream are a classic post-walk reward.
- Discovery Centre: A small but engaging interpretive centre with displays on the region's Aboriginal heritage, logging history and wildlife. Kids will love the touchscreens and the life-sized forest diorama.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds, wompoo fruit-doves and the elusive paradise riflebird. The reserve is a hotspot for birders, especially after rain.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours here — enough time to walk the boardwalk, enjoy the lookout and grab a coffee at the cafe. If you're a keen birder or photographer, allow 2–3 hours to explore the quieter edges of the reserve. The circuit is short but rich in detail; there's no need to rush. Combine it with a morning at nearby Maleny or Montville for a full day in the hinterland.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Maleny: A charming town with artisan shops, the Maleny Botanic Gardens and excellent dining. Just 5 minutes' drive from the reserve.
- Montville: A village with a European alpine feel, known for its galleries, fudge shops and the Kondalilla National Park with its stunning waterfall walk.
- Kondalilla National Park: Home to the 90-metre Kondalilla Falls. The 4.6 km circuit track is a rewarding hike through rainforest and eucalypt forest.
- Glass House Mountains National Park: Iconic volcanic plugs offering hiking trails with panoramic views. The summit of Mount Ngungun is a popular sunrise spot.
- Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk: A multi-day trail that passes near the reserve; day-walk sections are accessible from various points.
