Kiama is a classic NSW coastal town where the Pacific meets lush green hills. Famous for its blowhole, the town exudes a relaxed surf vibe with a strong community spirit, excellent cafes, and a backdrop of volcanic rock formations. It's a perfect stop on a drive down the South Coast, offering easy walks, whale watching in season, and a taste of authentic beachside living.
Highlights & What to See
- Kiama Blowhole: The town's iconic natural attraction – a powerful spout of seawater shooting up to 25 metres from a volcanic rock fissure. Best viewed on a south-easterly swell.
- Kiama Harbour & Surf Beach: A working harbour with fishing boats, seafood takeaways, and a grassy headland perfect for watching the sunset or spotting dolphins.
- Kiama Coastal Walk: A stunning 20km path linking Kiama to Gerringong, passing through rainforest, farmland, and cliff tops with dramatic ocean views.
- Little Blowhole: A quieter, less crowded version of the main blowhole, located just south of town – often more impressive after heavy seas.
- Kiama Lighthouse: A historic lighthouse on the headland with panoramic views of the coastline – a great spot for photography and whale watching (June–November).
- Pioneer Museum Complex: A collection of heritage buildings including a schoolhouse, church, and blacksmith shop, offering insight into Kiama's early settler history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to see the main blowhole, wander the harbour, and grab a coffee. However, to fully appreciate the coastal walk and explore nearby beaches, allow a full day. If you're staying overnight, consider two days to include a drive to the Southern Highlands or a day trip to Jervis Bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gerringong: A laid-back surf village just south, with beautiful beaches and the end point of the Kiama Coastal Walk.
- Berry: A charming historic town with boutique shops, antique stores, and excellent dining – ideal for a leisurely lunch stop.
- Jervis Bay: Famous for its white sand beaches and clear waters, about a 40-minute drive south – perfect for swimming, kayaking, and dolphin cruises.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park: A long, unspoiled beach between Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads, great for walks and birdwatching.
- Kangaroo Valley: A scenic valley with lush rainforest, historic bridges, and the Hampden Bridge – a lovely contrast to the coast.
