Iluka Nature Reserve is a pristine coastal haven on the northern side of Port Stephens, where ancient rainforest meets sweeping beaches and dramatic headlands. This protected area is a haven for birdlife and offers some of the most scenic coastal walks in the region, with wildflowers, whale-watching lookouts, and a sense of wilderness just minutes from the holiday towns of Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay.
Highlights & What to See
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk: A steep but rewarding 2.2 km return climb to panoramic views over Port Stephens, the heads, and offshore islands. Best at sunrise or sunset.
- Gan Gan Lookout: Drive-up lookout offering a bird’s-eye view of the bay, sand dunes, and Stockton Beach. Great for photography.
- Fingal Bay Spit Walk: A scenic coastal track that leads to a sand spit connecting to Fingal Island, with chance sightings of dolphins and seabirds.
- Iluka Rainforest Walk: A short boardwalk through a remnant of littoral rainforest, with interpretive signs about the unique ecology.
- Birubi Beach: The northern end of Stockton Beach, famous for its sand dunes and camel rides. Access via the reserve.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least half a day to fully experience the reserve. Start early with the Tomaree Head walk (allow 1–1.5 hours), then explore the Gan Gan Lookout and a beach stroll. If you're keen on photography or whale watching (May–November), you could easily spend a full day here, including a picnic lunch overlooking the bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
