Fraser Island (K'gari), the world's largest sand island, is a raw, elemental paradise off Queensland's coast. Its colossal dunes, ancient rainforests, and crystalline lakes create a landscape that feels otherworldly. This UNESCO World Heritage site is best explored in a 4WD, as the island's sandy tracks lead to secluded beaches, freshwater swimming holes, and dramatic shipwrecks. For international travellers, it's a bucket-list destination that combines Aboriginal heritage, wildlife encounters (dingoes, whales, and birds), and epic outdoor adventures.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 days on Fraser Island to fully experience its diversity. With a 4WD, you can base yourself at Kingfisher Bay or Eurong and do day trips to the key sites. A longer 4–5 day trip allows for hiking the Great Walk or exploring the remote northern beaches. If you're short on time, a day trip from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach covers the highlights, but you'll miss the island's wild, immersive atmosphere. Plan to be self-sufficient with supplies, as facilities are limited.
