Evans Head is a laid-back coastal town on the far north coast of New South Wales, where the Richmond River meets the sea. With its uncrowded beaches, national park hinterland, and a palpable sense of old-school beachside nostalgia, it's the kind of place where you can easily spend a week doing very little—and love every minute of it. The town's main street has a handful of cafes and a golf course, but the real draw is the wild, beautiful coastline and the nearby Bundjalung National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Evans Head Beach: A sweeping, patrolled beach perfect for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The northern end is popular with surfers, while the southern end near the river mouth is calmer for families.
- Bundjalung National Park: Just south of town, this park protects coastal heath, rainforest, and the stunning Iluka Bluff lookout. Walk the Iluka Bluff Walking Track for panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean and the mouth of the Clarence River.
- Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome: A historic WWII airfield that now houses a small aviation museum. The museum has a fascinating collection of memorabilia and aircraft, including a replica of the Southern Cross.
- Surfing and Fishing: Evans Head is a renowned fishing spot, both off the beach and from the breakwall. Surfers will find consistent waves at the main beach and nearby Airforce Beach.
- Richmond River: Kayak or paddleboard up the river, or take a scenic cruise to spot dolphins, pelicans, and sea eagles. The river is also great for crabbing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Evans Head rewards a relaxed pace. While you could see the highlights in a day trip from Ballina or Byron Bay, it's better to spend at least two to three days to fully appreciate the beaches, explore Bundjalung National Park, and enjoy the local fishing and surfing. If you're self-driving, consider staying a night or two to break up the journey between Sydney and Brisbane—it's a peaceful alternative to the busy coastal towns further south.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
