Flanked by World Heritage rainforest and the shimmering Pacific, the Clarence Valley unfurls as a lush, laid-back corridor between Coffs Harbour and the Queensland border. This is classic Northern Rivers country: a patchwork of sugarcane fields, national parks, and sleepy historic towns where the pace of life is dictated by the river that gives the region its name. For travellers on a self-drive itinerary between Sydney and Brisbane, the Clarence Valley offers a genuine slice of rural Australia, with standout nature experiences, a thriving local food scene, and a rich Indigenous and pioneer heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Yamba – This coastal gem at the river's mouth is a surfer's paradise with a hip café culture. Stroll along the breakwall at sunset, paddle in the protected estuary, or explore the Yuraygir National Park coastal walk.
- Grafton – Famous for its jacaranda trees that erupt in purple each spring, Grafton is a heritage-listed city with elegant Victorian buildings. Don't miss the Clarence River ferry, a free cable punt that's been operating since 1900.
- Bundjalung National Park – A wild stretch of coastline featuring the 8km Iluka Bluff walking track, ancient sand dunes, and the pristine Jerusalem Creek. Keep an eye out for sea eagles and migrating whales (June–Nov).
- Ulmarra & Maclean – Two historic river towns: Ulmarra charms with its restored wharf and antiques shops, while Maclean proudly flies the Scottish flag and offers a 'Scotch Tour' of its tartan-painted power poles.
- Clarence River Cruises – The best way to appreciate the valley's scale is from the water. Several operators run lunch, sunset, and houseboat trips, with chances to spot dolphins and pelicans.
- Yuraygir National Park – The only coastal national park in NSW that protects a complete chain of dune lakes. The 65km Yuraygir Coastal Walk is a multi-day trekker's dream, but day walks from Angourie or Brooms Head are equally rewarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows a comfortable loop: base yourself in Yamba for a day of beach and river action, then spend a day exploring Grafton and the inland towns. If you're a keen walker or kayaker, add a fourth day to tackle sections of the Yuraygir Coastal Walk or paddle the Clarence River. The valley works well as a two-night stopover on a Sydney–Brisbane road trip, or as a relaxed week-long escape combining river life and national parks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coffs Harbour – Just 40 minutes south, with the iconic Big Banana, excellent diving at Solitary Islands Marine Park, and the lush Dorrigo National Park in its hinterland.
- Byron Bay – An hour south of Yamba, Byron offers world-class surf, a vibrant food scene, and the Cape Byron walking track. It's a lively contrast to the Clarence Valley's quiet charm.
- Evans Head – A laid-back coastal town with a beautiful national park campground and excellent fishing. It's the southern gateway to Bundjalung National Park.
- Lamington National Park – A 2.5-hour drive north into Queensland, this Gondwana Rainforest World Heritage site offers spectacular tree-top walks and ancient Antarctic beech forests.
- Ballina – Known for its surf breaks, the Richmond River ferry, and the Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum. A good stopover on the drive north.
