Perched on the easternmost point of mainland Australia, the Cape Byron Lighthouse is a dazzling white sentinel that has guided ships since 1901. The short but steep walk up to the lighthouse rewards you with panoramic views that sweep from the turquoise Pacific to the green hinterland. It’s the quintessential Byron Bay experience—part history, part nature, and utterly unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunrise at the Lighthouse: The most magical time to visit, as the first rays of sunlight hit the sea and the sky blazes with colour. It’s a spiritual moment shared with a small crowd of early risers.
- Coastal Walk: The Cape Byron Walking Track loops around the headland, passing through rainforest, rocky coves, and lookout points. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating whales (June–November).
- Lighthouse Museum: Housed in the former keeper’s cottage, the museum tells the story of the lighthouse’s construction and the lives of its keepers. Climb the tower for an even higher vantage point.
- Most Easterly Point: A sign marks the exact spot where the sun first hits the Australian mainland. It makes for a classic photo op.
- Byron Bay's Café Scene: After the walk, head into town for a flat white and smashed avocado at one of the many hip cafés, like The Top Shop or Combi.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to fully experience the lighthouse and its surrounds. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to secure parking and enjoy the dawn show. The walk from the town centre to the lighthouse takes about 40 minutes, but most people drive and park near the top. Spend an hour exploring the lighthouse and museum, then another hour meandering the coastal track. Combine with a morning at Byron Bay’s main beach or a swim at Wategos Beach just below the lighthouse.
