Bouddi National Park is a coastal gem on the Central Coast of New South Wales, offering a captivating blend of ancient bushland, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and secluded beaches. This park feels wonderfully wild yet accessible, with a network of walking trails that reward you with sweeping ocean vistas and the chance to spot whales during migration season. Whether you're a keen bushwalker, a beach lover, or a history buff, Bouddi delivers a quintessentially Australian outdoor experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – This 8.5 km one-way track is the park's showpiece, threading through coastal heath and towering eucalypts with constant sea views. Highlights include the historic Maitland Bay shipwreck site and the spectacular Putty Beach lookout.
- Maitland Bay – A beautiful, sheltered beach accessible only on foot. Swim in the clear waters, explore rock pools at low tide, or simply picnic on the soft sand while watching the waves roll in.
- Broken Bay Lookout – A short walk from the car park leads to this panoramic viewpoint over Broken Bay, Lion Island, and the distant Sydney skyline. It's a prime whale-watching spot from May to November.
- Gerrin Point Lookout – Another stunning vista, especially at sunrise, where you can see the endless Pacific and the rugged coastline stretching north.
- Aboriginal Heritage – The park protects several Aboriginal sites, including shell middens and rock engravings. The Bouddi Aboriginal Place walk offers insight into the Darkinjung people's enduring connection to this land.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate Bouddi National Park, plan for at least a full day. Arrive early to tackle the Bouddi Coastal Walk (allow 4-5 hours one way, or 3 hours if you arrange a car shuffle). Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at Maitland Bay or one of the many scenic lookouts. If you're short on time, a half-day visit focused on the lookouts and a short walk to Maitland Bay is still rewarding. For a relaxed pace, consider an overnight stay at the Putty Beach campground.
