Stretching six kilometres along Sydney’s eastern seaboard, the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is one of the city’s most exhilarating urban trails. This iconic cliff-top path delivers sweeping ocean views, hidden coves, and a front-row seat to Sydney’s beach culture. With its mix of rugged sandstone cliffs, pristine sands, and lively seaside communities, the walk is as much about people-watching and café-hopping as it is about nature. Best tackled in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the golden light, it’s a must-do for any visitor wanting to experience Sydney’s coastal soul.
Highlights & What to See
- Tamarama Beach – Known as ‘Glamarama’ for its bronzed locals and compact, stunningly beautiful stretch of sand. Great for a quick dip or a photo stop.
- Bronte Beach – A family-friendly favourite with a rock pool, picnic areas, and a grassy park. The Bronte Baths ocean pool is perfect for a swim without the surf.
- Waverley Cemetery – Perched on dramatic cliffs, this historic cemetery offers hauntingly beautiful views. Look for ornate Victorian graves and the resting place of poet Henry Lawson.
- Clovelly Beach – A narrow, sheltered inlet ideal for snorkelling and a calm swim. The boardwalk along the rock wall is a prime spot for watching waves crash.
- Gordon’s Bay – A tiny, secluded cove between Clovelly and Coogee, popular with snorkellers. The underwater nature trail here is a hidden gem.
- Coogee Beach – The lively endpoint, with a long sandy beach, ocean baths, and a buzzing strip of cafés and pubs. Perfect for a celebratory fish and chips or a sunset drink.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2 to 3 hours for the full walk without stops, but most people stretch it to a half-day or full-day outing. Start at Bondi in the morning, take your time at each beach, pause for a coffee or a swim, and you’ll easily fill 4 to 5 hours. The walk is easy to moderate, with some stairs and inclines, but suitable for most fitness levels. If you’re short on time, focus on the Bondi to Bronte section (about 2.5 km), which packs the most dramatic scenery.
