Birubi Beach
Birubi Beach is the northernmost beach of the Stockton Bight, a 32-kilometre stretch of pristine sand that forms the longest continuous beach in NSW. With its towering sand dunes, wild surf, and views that stretch to the horizon, this is a place where nature feels raw and untamed. It’s a favourite for four-wheel driving, sandboarding, and horse riding along the shore, offering a genuine slice of the Aussie beach lifestyle away from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Stockton Bight Sand Dunes – The largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, these golden hills are perfect for sandboarding (hire a board from local operators) or a guided quad-bike tour.
- Four-Wheel Driving on the Beach – A permit allows you to drive on the sand, making it easy to find a secluded spot for a picnic or to launch a fishing line. Watch the tides carefully.
- Horse Riding along the Shore – Several local companies offer guided beach rides, an unforgettable way to experience the vastness of the coastline.
- Whale Watching (May–November) – The headland at the northern end provides a prime vantage point for spotting humpbacks migrating along the coast.
- Sunset over the Dunes – As the sun dips behind the dunes, the sand glows amber and orange – a photographer’s dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring Birubi Beach, combining a 4WD drive with a sandboarding session. If you’re keen on a longer beach walk or a horse ride, allow a full day. The beach is also a great spot for a relaxed afternoon picnic, especially if you’re staying in nearby Port Stephens. Note that access is via a sandy track (4WD recommended) or by walking from the car park at the end of Gan Gan Road.
