Just a short drive from Port Stephens, Arakoon National Park is a serene coastal haven where lush bushland meets the Tasman Sea. This compact park packs a punch with its historic lighthouse, quiet beaches, and walking trails that offer sweeping ocean views. It’s an ideal spot for a half-day escape into nature, combining gentle exercise with a dose of maritime history.
Highlights & What to See
- Smoky Cape Lighthouse: Climb to this 1891 lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline. The short walk from the car park is rewarded with a classic photo op.
- Trial Bay Gaol: Explore the atmospheric ruins of this 19th-century prison, built by convicts and later used as an internment camp during WWI. Interpretive signs bring its story to life.
- Little Bay: A sheltered, sandy cove perfect for a picnic or a calm swim. The clear waters are great for snorkelling on a still day.
- Horseshoe Bay Walking Track: A 2.5 km loop that winds through coastal heath and eucalypt forest, with several lookout points over the bay.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day (4–5 hours) to explore the main sights at a relaxed pace. Start at the Trial Bay Gaol, then walk up to the lighthouse and spend an hour at Little Bay. If you’re keen on the longer walking trails, allow a full day and bring a picnic. The park is compact enough that you can easily combine it with a morning in Port Stephens or a lunch stop in South West Rocks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- South West Rocks: A laid-back coastal town with a charming main street, great fish and chips, and access to the park’s entrance.
