Wauchope Nature Reserve
Wauchope Nature Reserve is a pocket of wild coastal forest just outside Port Macquarie, offering a serene escape into lush subtropical rainforest. The reserve protects a patch of the endangered Lowland Rainforest on the New South Wales coast, with towering red cedars, palms, and a dense understorey of ferns and vines. It's a favourite for short walks, birdwatching, and getting a sense of the region's pre-settlement vegetation.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainforest Walk – A 1.5 km loop trail leads through the heart of the reserve, crossing a small creek and passing giant strangler figs and ancient tree ferns. The path is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for wonga pigeons, green catbirds, and the occasional powerful owl. The dense canopy attracts a variety of forest birds, especially in the early morning.
- Picnic Area – A small grassy clearing with a table and bench is perfect for a quiet lunch surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
- Interpretive Signs – Along the walk, signs explain the ecology and history of the rainforest, including the role of Aboriginal people in managing this landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about one to two hours here, which is enough to complete the loop walk at a leisurely pace and sit quietly for a while. If you're combining it with a visit to nearby Timbertown or the Hastings River, half a day is ample. The reserve is best visited in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and birds are most active.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Bago Bluff National Park – A larger wilderness area with dramatic escarpments and longer hikes, about 20 minutes south of Wauchope.
