Tomaree Head is the dramatic rocky headland that guards the entrance to Port Stephens, offering one of the most spectacular coastal panoramas on the NSW mid-north coast. A short but steep walk rewards you with 360-degree views of the blue-green ocean, golden beaches, and the vast Myall Lakes system. This is a must-do for any visitor to the region, combining a dose of natural beauty with a satisfying sense of achievement.
Highlights & What to See
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk: A 2.2 km return trail that climbs steadily to the summit. The path is well-maintained but steep in sections, with stairs and boardwalks. The payoff is an unforgettable view of Shoal Bay, Zenith Beach, and the distant offshore islands.
- World War II Gun Emplacements: Along the walk, you'll pass concrete bunkers and gun emplacements that were part of the coastal defence network. These historical relics add a fascinating layer to the hike.
- Whale Watching: Between May and November, the headland is an excellent vantage point for spotting humpback whales migrating along the coast. Bring binoculars.
- Shoal Bay: After your walk, cool off at the patrolled beach just below the headland. The calm waters are perfect for swimming and kayaking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the return walk, including time to soak in the views and explore the gun emplacements. The walk is best done early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. Combine with a morning or afternoon at Shoal Bay for a perfect half-day outing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Stephens: The broader area offers dolphin cruises, sand dunes at Stockton Beach, and the towns of Nelson Bay and Anna Bay for dining and accommodation.
- Myall Lakes National Park: Just north of Tomaree, this park features pristine lakes, coastal forests, and excellent kayaking and camping opportunities.
- Nelson Bay: The main hub of Port Stephens, with cafés, shops, and the departure point for whale-watching and dolphin cruises.
- Fingal Bay: A quieter beach town with a long sand spit and the Fingal Bay Lighthouse walk.
- Stockton Beach: Famous for its massive sand dunes, 4WD adventures, and the shipwreck of the SS Sygna.
