Rising dramatically from the coastal plain just west of Wollongong, Mount Keira (464 m) offers one of the Illawarra’s most accessible bushwalking and lookout experiences. Its rainforest-clad slopes, historic tramway trail, and sweeping views over the city, ocean, and escarpment make it a perfect half-day escape for nature lovers and hikers.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Keira Summit Lookout: Uninterrupted 360° views of Wollongong, the Pacific Ocean, and the Illawarra escarpment – especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
- Mount Keira Ring Track: A 4 km loop through subtropical rainforest, with giant figs, tree ferns, and the chance to spot lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Byarong Park & the Tramway Trail: Follow the historic route of the Mount Keira tramway, which once carried coal from the mountain. The gentle gradient is ideal for a family walk or mountain bike ride.
- Mount Keira Summit Park: Picnic areas, barbecues, and a children’s playground at the summit, perfect for a relaxed lunch with a view.
- Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area: Connects to longer walks such as the 8 km Mount Kembla loop, offering deeper immersion in the region’s ancient rainforest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day (3–4 hours) to drive up, complete the Ring Track, and soak in the lookout. If you’re keen on extending your walk to Mount Kembla or exploring the tramway trail, plan for a full day. The summit is also a popular quick stop for a photo – 30 minutes will do if you’re pressed for time.
