Buderoo National Park
Buderoo National Park is a rugged coastal wilderness north of Port Macquarie, where dense rainforest meets dramatic sea cliffs and secluded beaches. This lesser-known gem offers a raw, untamed slice of the NSW coast, perfect for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving solitude in nature. With its ancient Antarctic beech trees, cascading waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, it’s a place where the pace slows and the landscape takes centre stage.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Giant Walk: A challenging 8 km return trek through subtropical rainforest to a lookout over the ocean and the park’s iconic sea stacks. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Buderoo Falls: A series of tiered waterfalls plunging into a deep pool, best visited after rain. The short walk from the car park is lined with staghorn ferns and moss-covered rocks.
- Dune and Beach System: The park protects one of the few undeveloped dune systems on the mid-north coast. The beach is a nesting site for sea turtles and a great spot for whale watching (June–November).
- Ancient Antarctic Beech Trees: A remnant Gondwanan forest tucked in the park’s southern section, where these prehistoric trees create a cathedral-like canopy. The boardwalk loop is wheelchair accessible.
- Birdwatching Hotspots: More than 150 bird species, including the rare rufous scrub-bird and the glossy black-cockatoo. The heathland trails at dawn are particularly rewarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to explore the park’s main walks and beaches. If you’re a keen hiker, two days allows you to tackle the longer trails and enjoy a night of stargazing away from light pollution. The park has basic camping facilities (book ahead), so you can wake to the sound of surf and birdsong. For a quick visit, a half-day loop to Buderoo Falls and a short beach walk gives a satisfying taste.
