Nestled at the mouth of the mighty Clarence River, Iluka is a sleepy coastal village that punches well above its weight in natural beauty. With World Heritage-listed rainforest meeting pristine surf beaches, this is a place for those who love unspoiled landscapes and a slower pace of life. The town's relaxed vibe and excellent fishing make it a perfect stop on a North Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Iluka Nature Reserve: Wander through one of the last remnants of littoral rainforest in NSW on the short, wheelchair-accessible Rainforest Loop Walk – look for flying foxes and colourful kingfishers.
- Iluka Bluff & Lookout: Climb to the top for sweeping views over the Clarence River mouth, the ocean, and across to Yamba. It's a prime spot for whale watching (June–November).
- Beaches: Main Beach offers gentle waves for swimming, while the more exposed southern end is a favourite for surfers. The patrolled area near the surf club is safest for families.
- Fishing & Boating: The Clarence River is a renowned fishing ground – cast a line from the breakwall or launch a tinny at the free boat ramp. Mulloway, bream and flathead are common catches.
- Bundjalung National Park: Just south of town, this park protects heathland, coastal dunes and the stunning Jerusalem Creek – a great spot for a paddle or a quiet picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Iluka rewards a leisurely visit. Most travellers spend a half-day exploring the nature reserve and beaches, but if you're a keen fisher or hiker, consider an overnight stay. Pair it with a morning in Yamba (just a 10-minute ferry ride across the river) and you've got a perfect day trip from the Coffs Coast or Byron Bay region.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yamba: Iluka's lively sister town across the river – famous for its epic surf breaks, great cafes and the iconic Yamba Lighthouse.
- Maclean: The 'Scottish Town in Australia', 20 minutes south, known for its tartan-clad main street and historic buildings.
- Grafton: About 40 minutes inland, Grafton is famed for its jacaranda-lined streets (blooming in October/November) and the Clarence River.
- Yuraygir National Park: A stunning coastal park north of Yamba, with long walking trails, remote beaches and excellent birding.
- Coffs Harbour: An hour south, offering the Big Banana, the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk and a thriving food scene.
