Hidden deep within the Newnes Plateau, the Glow Worm Tunnel is one of New South Wales’ most magical natural attractions. This abandoned railway tunnel, carved through solid rock in the early 1900s, is now home to thousands of glow worms that create a starry ceiling effect when you venture inside. Reaching the tunnel involves a scenic drive through Wollemi National Park followed by a short walk – an adventure that feels wonderfully remote.
Highlights & What to See
- The Glow Worm Display: Once inside the dark tunnel, wait a few minutes for your eyes to adjust – then look up. Thousands of tiny blue-green lights dot the ceiling, like a subterranean Milky Way. The best effect is on a still, damp evening.
- Historic Railway Remnants: The tunnel was part of the old Wolgan Valley Railway, built to haul shale oil. You’ll see the original brick portal and, along the walk, the remains of the railway formation and a few old sleepers.
- Bushwalking and Waterfalls: The 1.8 km (each way) walk to the tunnel follows a gentle grade through eucalypt forest. Near the tunnel entrance, a short detour leads to a pretty waterfall (flowing after rain).
- Wollemi National Park: The surrounding park is a World Heritage-listed wilderness of deep gorges and ancient pines. Keep an eye out for wallabies and lyrebirds along the track.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day for the round trip from Port Macquarie or Lithgow. The drive to the trailhead (via the unpaved Glow Worm Tunnel Road) takes about 45 minutes from Lithgow, plus the 30-40 minute walk each way. Plan to arrive in the late afternoon so you can experience the glow worms at their most active after dusk – but bring a torch and warm clothing, as the tunnel is cool and dark.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lithgow: Gateway to the tunnel and a historic mining town with the Zig Zag Railway and excellent bushwalking in the nearby Blue Mountains.
- Newnes Plateau: Explore the ruins of the old Newnes shale-oil works and the Wolgan Valley lookout – a dramatic escarpment view.
- Blue Mountains National Park: Just an hour south, offering the Three Sisters, scenic railway, and countless hiking trails.
- Port Macquarie: A coastal base with beaches, the Koala Hospital, and the Hastings River – perfect for a relaxed finish to your trip.
