Blue Mountains National Park
Carved from sandstone over millennia, the Blue Mountains National Park is a wilderness of dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and eucalyptus forests that cast a blue haze across the horizon. Just a short drive west of Sydney, this World Heritage-listed park offers world-class bushwalking, Aboriginal rock art, and jaw-dropping lookouts that will leave you breathless.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters – The iconic sandstone formation at Echo Point is the park's most photographed sight. Arrive early to beat the crowds and watch the sunrise paint the escarpment gold.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world, glide over the rainforest on the Skyway, or walk the elevated boardwalk through the ancient valley floor.
- Wentworth Falls – A stunning multi-tiered waterfall that plunges into a fern-lined gorge. The short walk to the lookout is rewarding, but continue on the National Pass for epic views.
- Grand Canyon Track – A classic 6.3 km loop that descends into a lush, narrow canyon with mossy walls, waterfalls, and hanging swamps. Allow 3–4 hours and pack sturdy shoes.
- Govetts Leap Lookout – Overlooks the Bridal Veil Falls and the Grose Valley. It's less crowded than Echo Point and offers a sweeping panorama of the wild escarpment.
- Aboriginal Rock Art – Discover ancient stencils and engravings at Red Hands Cave (near Glenbrook) or along the Walls Cave track. These sites offer a profound connection to the region's first people.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that two full days in the park is ideal: one day for the classic lookouts and Scenic World around Katoomba, and a second day for a longer hike such as the Grand Canyon Track or a trip to the quieter northern section around Blackheath. If you have only a day, focus on the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls, and a short walk – you'll still leave awed.
