Dixon Park is a beautifully maintained coastal reserve in Port Macquarie, offering sweeping ocean views, grassy picnic areas, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. This headland park is a favourite spot for whale watching during migration season and provides a front-row seat to stunning sunrises over the Tasman Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Lookout & Whale Watching: The park’s elevated position makes it one of the best land-based whale-watching spots on the Mid North Coast. Between June and November, humpbacks are regularly seen breaching just offshore.
- Dixon Park Beach: A patrolled swimming beach with gentle waves, ideal for families. The rock pools at the southern end are great for exploring at low tide.
- Grassy Picnic Areas: Shaded tables and barbecue facilities dot the headland, perfect for a seaside lunch with panoramic views.
- Coastal Walk Access: The park connects to the scenic Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, which stretches for 15 km along the coastline. A short stroll north leads to Tacking Point Lighthouse.
- Sunrise & Photography: The headland’s easterly aspect makes it a prime spot for capturing the first light over the ocean, with the lighthouse often featured in the foreground.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dixon Park is best enjoyed as a relaxed stop of 1–2 hours. Combine a morning walk along the coastal path with a picnic breakfast, or spend a lazy afternoon swimming and watching the waves. If you’re whale watching, allow extra time for patience – sightings can be frequent but unpredictable. The park works well as a quick 30-minute photo stop if you’re pressed for time.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: A historic lighthouse just a 10-minute walk north along the coastal path, offering more dramatic ocean views.

- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre: A 3-km drive south, featuring a boardwalk through coastal rainforest and a canopy-level viewing platform.
- Port Macquarie Beaches: Town Beach and Flynns Beach are both within 5 minutes’ drive, each offering different swimming and surf conditions.
