Welcome to Coonabarabran, the self-proclaimed 'Astronomy Capital of Australia' and the gateway to the spectacular Warrumbungle National Park. This charming country town in northern NSW is a haven for stargazers, hikers, and anyone craving wide-open skies and dramatic volcanic landscapes. With its excellent dark-sky status and a rich Indigenous and pioneering history, Coonabarabran offers a genuine outback experience without the remote isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Warrumbungle National Park – A stunning landscape of ancient volcanic peaks, perfect for day hikes like the Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk. The park is also Australia's only Dark Sky Park, offering incredible night-sky viewing.
- Siding Spring Observatory – Home to the largest optical telescope in Australia, this working observatory has a fascinating visitor centre with interactive displays and telescope tours.
- Australian Astronomical Observatory – Another world-class facility where you can learn about cutting-edge space research and even book a guided tour.
- Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre – Start here for maps, local tips, and a small museum showcasing the town's history and the 1961 meteorite fall.
- Pilliga Forest – Just south of town, this vast cypress-pine forest is home to the endangered Pilliga mouse and offers scenic drives, birdwatching, and the unique Sandstone Caves.
- Timor Caves – A network of limestone caves about 30 minutes west, with guided tours through impressive stalactite formations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Coonabarabran for at least two nights to fully explore the Warrumbungles and the observatories. A day is enough for a quick drive-through, but to enjoy a hike (like the Breadknife) and an evening stargazing session, plan for two full days. If you're keen on visiting both Siding Spring and the Australian Astronomical Observatory, allow an extra half-day.
