Dubbo
Dubbo, a vibrant country city in the heart of New South Wales, is best known for its world-class zoo and rich outback heritage. It's a perfect stop on a self-drive itinerary between Sydney and the Outback, offering a blend of wildlife encounters, Aboriginal culture, and rural charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Taronga Western Plains Zoo – One of Australia's largest open-range zoos, where you can cycle or drive through habitats of rhinos, giraffes, and cheetahs. Don't miss the keeper talks and the overnight safari experience.
- Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden – A serene escape with themed gardens including a Japanese garden, a succulent garden, and a sensory trail. Perfect for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.
- Old Dubbo Gaol – Step back in time at this 19th-century prison with interactive exhibits and ghost tours that reveal the harsh realities of colonial justice.
- Aboriginal Culture at Wiradjuri Country – Learn about the local Wiradjuri people through guided walks, art galleries, and cultural centres in and around Dubbo.
- Dundullimal Homestead – A beautifully preserved 1840s slab hut and farmstead offering a glimpse into pioneer life, with period furnishings and outbuildings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 days in Dubbo. A full day is enough to explore the zoo (allow 4–6 hours) and one other attraction, such as the gaol or botanic garden. For a more relaxed pace, stay two nights to also enjoy the local food scene and perhaps a sunset river cruise on the Macquarie River. If you're passing through on a road trip, even a half-day stop to see the zoo is worthwhile.
