Perched on a rocky headland at the northern entrance to the Camden Haven River, this compact but characterful lighthouse has been guiding vessels since 1879. Its distinctive white tower, painted with a single red band, offers sweeping views across the Pacific Ocean, the Camden Haven Inlet, and the distant mountains of the Great Dividing Range. The lighthouse is part of the Crowdy Bay National Park, making it a perfect stop for a coastal walk, whale watching, or simply soaking up the wild beauty of the Mid North Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lighthouse Itself: A well-preserved example of a 19th-century timber-framed, iron-clad lighthouse. Climb the small stairs for a closer look at the lantern room and the original clockwork mechanism.
- Coastal Views: From the headland, gaze north to Diamond Head and south to Laurieton. On a clear day, you might spot dolphins or humpback whales (May–November).
- Crowdy Bay National Park: The lighthouse sits within this park, which offers excellent walking trails, birdwatching, and the chance to see kangaroos and wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Beachcombing: The nearby North Haven Beach and Pilot Beach are pristine stretches of sand, perfect for a quiet stroll or a picnic.
- Historic Cemetery: Just south of the lighthouse, a small cemetery holds graves of early settlers and shipwreck victims, adding a poignant layer to the visit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal. Arrive early to enjoy the morning light on the lighthouse and the beach. Spend an hour exploring the lighthouse and headland, then walk along the beach or take one of the short trails in Crowdy Bay National Park. Combine with a visit to the nearby town of Laurieton for lunch or a coffee. If you’re a keen photographer, plan for sunset when the lighthouse is bathed in golden light.
