On the south coast of Jervis Bay, Booderee National Park is a pristine Aboriginal-owned park where white-sand beaches meet turquoise waters and ancient bushland. Jointly managed by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community, it's a place of profound natural beauty and cultural significance. Swim at some of the world's whitest beaches, spot dolphins and sea eagles, and explore walking trails through coastal heath and rainforest remnants. The park feels far from the crowds, yet it's only a short drive from Huskisson.
Highlights & What to See
- Hyams Beach – Vies for the title of world's whitest sand; the water is dazzlingly clear, perfect for a swim or snorkel.
- Murrays Beach – A sheltered cove with pristine sands and excellent snorkelling around rocky reefs; often quieter than Hyams.
- Booderee Botanic Gardens – The only Aboriginal-owned botanic garden in Australia, showcasing native plants and cultural stories along easy boardwalks.
- Cave Beach – A wilder stretch backed by dunes and cliffs; a short walk leads to sea caves and dramatic rock formations.
- Steamers Beach – Accessible via a 2.5 km walking track through coastal scrub; rewards with a vast, often empty beach and whale-watching opportunities (May–November).
- Gang-Man-Gang Walking Track – A 1.5 km loop through rainforest-like gullies and eucalypt forest, with a lookout over Jervis Bay.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to truly appreciate Booderee. Spend the morning exploring the botanic gardens and a short walk like Gang-Man-Gang, then hit the beaches for swimming and snorkelling. If you only have a half-day, focus on one or two beaches and a lookout – Hyams Beach and the Cape St George Lighthouse ruins (just outside the park) make a quick but rewarding combo. The park closes at sunset, so plan to leave before dusk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Huskisson – A lively seaside town with dolphin-watching cruises, great cafes, and the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum.
- Jervis Bay Village – A quiet settlement within the park, with basic supplies and access to Greenpatch and Bristol Point beaches.
- Cape St George Lighthouse – Historic ruins on the headland just north of the park, offering panoramic views and a fascinating maritime history.

- Nowra & Shoalhaven River – About 30 minutes north, for kayaking, river cruises, and the historic town of Berry.
