Stretching along the southern edge of Hervey Bay, Urangan Beach is a calm, family-friendly strip of sand that feels a world away from the busy tourist hubs. Its gentle waves and wide, flat shoreline make it perfect for a lazy swim or a long walk at low tide, when the exposed sand flats stretch far out to sea. The beach is backed by a grassy foreshore with picnic tables and a playground, and the iconic Urangan Pier — one of the longest in Queensland — juts 868 metres into the bay, offering superb fishing and sunset views.
Highlights & What to See
- Urangan Pier: Walk the historic timber pier for panoramic bay views, spot stingrays and turtles in the clear water, or cast a line from the end — it's a local favourite for whiting and flathead.
- Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens: Just a short walk from the beach, these lush gardens feature tropical plants, a Japanese garden, and a boardwalk through mangroves where you might see water dragons.
- Whale-watching: From July to November, humpback whales migrate through Hervey Bay — join a tour or simply scan the horizon from the pier for breaching whales.
- Reef & Wreck Dive Sites: The nearby Roy Rufus Artificial Reef and the HMAS Brisbane wreck are top spots for divers, reachable by charter from the Urangan Boat Harbour.
- Fraser Island (K'gari) Day Trips: Urangan is the departure point for ferries to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, famous for its rainforest, dingoes, and Lake McKenzie.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day enjoying the beach and pier, especially at sunset. If you want to explore the botanic gardens and grab a seafood lunch at the boat harbour, budget a full day. For whale-watching or a Fraser Island trip, add at least one more day — these are full-day excursions best started early.
