Stretching north of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is a laid-back corridor of golden beaches, lush hinterland, and easygoing surf towns. Less glitzy than the Gold Coast, it charms with its national parks, artisan food scene, and a pace that feels a world away from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Noosa National Park — coastal walks with jaw-dropping views over granite headlands and secluded coves; keep an eye out for koalas dozing in the trees.
- Mooloolaba Beach — a perfect arc of sand for swimming and people-watching, backed by a buzzing esplanade of cafes and boutiques.
- Australia Zoo — the late Steve Irwin’s legacy, a sprawling sanctuary where you can hand-feed kangaroos and watch croc shows.
- Glass House Mountains — dramatic volcanic peaks that rise from the hinterland; hike to the top of Mount Ngungun for panoramic views.
- Eumundi Markets — one of Australia’s best artisan markets, held Wednesdays and Saturdays, with local crafts, live music, and gourmet street food.
- Montville & Maleny — charming hinterland villages with galleries, cheeseries, and cellar doors set among rolling green hills.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Sunshine Coast at least three to four days to do it justice. Spend two days exploring Noosa and its national park, one day on the southern beaches (Mooloolaba, Caloundra), and a day driving the hinterland loop through Montville and Maleny. If you’re a keen hiker or surfer, tack on an extra day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Fraser Island (K’gari) — the world’s largest sand island, accessible from Hervey Bay (two hours north), offering wild dingoes and crystal-clear lakes.
- Moreton Island — a sandy escape with Tangalooma Wrecks for snorkelling and dolphin feeding, a short ferry from Brisbane.
- Byron Bay — a three-hour drive south, this iconic surf town has a boho vibe and the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse.
