Perched on the rocky headland south of Port Macquarie, Pirates Bay Lookout delivers one of the most dramatic coastal views on the Mid North Coast. The short, easy walk from the car park opens onto a sweeping panorama of the Tasman Sea, where the deep blue water crashes against jagged rock platforms and secluded sandy coves. It's a place to feel the salt spray on your face and watch for whales (May–November) or dolphins playing in the surf below. The lookout is also a prime spot for sunrise photography, when the golden light paints the cliffs and ocean in soft hues.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic coastal views – Gaze north over Flynn's Beach and the Port Macquarie coastline, or south towards the unspoilt beaches of Lighthouse Beach and beyond.
- Whale watching – During migration season, this elevated vantage point offers excellent opportunities to spot humpback whales breaching and tail-slapping.
- Rock platform exploration – At low tide, the wave-cut platforms below the lookout reveal rock pools teeming with small crabs, anemones and starfish – perfect for curious kids.
- Pirates Bay Beach – A short, steep track leads down to this quiet, patrolled beach (summer weekends) that's great for a swim or a picnic away from the crowds.
- Coastal Walk connection – The lookout is a key point on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, a spectacular 15 km trail linking the town's beaches and headlands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes to fully absorb the views, take photos and explore the immediate area. If you plan to descend to Pirates Bay Beach for a swim or a longer walk along the coastal trail, budget 1.5–2 hours. The lookout is best visited in the morning for calm conditions and clear light, or late afternoon for the golden hour glow.
