Stretching along the wild coastline between Port Macquarie and the Tacking Point Lighthouse, this easy coastal walk delivers sweeping ocean views, whale-watching opportunities (May–November), and a chance to explore one of Australia’s oldest surviving lighthouses. The path is well-maintained and family-friendly, with plenty of spots to pause for a picnic or a photo.
Highlights & What to See
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: Built in 1879, this whitewashed stone lighthouse is still active. Climb the gentle slope to its base for panoramic views of the coastline and, in season, migrating humpback whales.
- Coastal Rock Platforms: The walk passes several dramatic rock platforms where you can watch waves crash and, at low tide, explore rock pools teeming with marine life.
- Lookout Points: Multiple benches and small lookouts along the way make it easy to stop and soak in the scenery. Sunrise and sunset are especially magical.
- Native Flora & Fauna: Keep an eye out for sea eagles, wallabies, and the occasional pod of dolphins surfing the waves below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxed one-way walk from the lighthouse to the town beach (or vice versa). The trail is around 2.5 km each way, so you can easily do a return walk in half a day if you factor in picnic stops and photography. Many visitors combine it with a morning at the nearby beaches or a coffee at a seaside café.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie Town Centre: Stroll the historic main street, visit the Port Macquarie Museum, or enjoy a meal overlooking the Hastings River.
- Koala Hospital: A world-renowned facility dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of koalas. It’s a short drive from the lighthouse and a must-see for wildlife lovers.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre: Experience a boardwalk through a lush coastal rainforest, home to ancient trees, birds, and the occasional goanna.
- North Brother Mountain: For a more challenging walk, drive to this peak for panoramic views of the coast and hinterland – about 20 minutes from Port Macquarie.
- Crowdy Bay National Park: A wilder coastal park with dunes, heathlands, and the historic Diamond Head camping area, ideal for a day trip or overnight stay.
