Deep in the Blue Mountains, the Jenolan Caves are Australia’s most spectacular limestone cave system, a subterranean world of towering stalactites, shimmering crystal pools, and vast cathedral-like chambers. Discovered by Europeans in 1838 (but known to the Gundungurra people for millennia), these caves offer a journey into geological time, with guided tours that reveal the raw beauty of the underground. The surrounding bushland and historic Jenolan Caves House add a touch of Victorian-era charm, making it a perfect day trip or overnight escape from Sydney.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate a full day to experience the caves properly. Arrive by mid-morning to join two different cave tours (each lasts 1–1.5 hours), leaving time to explore the grounds and enjoy lunch at Caves House. If you’re based in Sydney (2.5 hours away), a dawn start makes a day trip feasible, but an overnight stay lets you soak up the atmospheric twilight tours and early-morning wildlife. For a relaxed visit, two nights allows you to do three cave tours and a bushwalk without rushing.
