Iluka Nature Reserve is a pristine coastal haven on the northern side of the Clarence River mouth, just a short drive from the historic town of Iluka. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed reserve protects one of the last remnants of subtropical lowland rainforest in New South Wales, offering a serene escape into ancient landscapes. Wander through towering palms, lush ferns, and giant strangler figs along well-maintained boardwalks, and keep an eye out for vibrant birdlife like the wompoo fruit-dove and the elusive powerful owl. The reserve also boasts stunning beaches and the iconic Iluka Bluff, where the river meets the sea – a prime spot for whale watching during migration season.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find half a day (around 3–4 hours) sufficient to explore the main boardwalk, enjoy the beach, and take in the views from Iluka Bluff. If you’re an avid birdwatcher or want to combine a visit with a swim, plan for a full day. The reserve is compact, so you can easily pair it with a morning exploring Iluka township and an afternoon on the water.
