Iluka is a sleepy coastal village at the mouth of the Clarence River, where the river meets the sea in a swirl of sand and surf. It’s the quieter, more laid-back neighbour of Yamba, with a raw natural beauty that feels a world away from the crowds. The centrepiece is the Iluka Nature Reserve, a stunning pocket of littoral rainforest that’s recognised as a World Heritage site. For travellers on a self-drive itinerary along the North Coast, Iluka offers a chance to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and explore one of the most significant coastal rainforest remnants in New South Wales.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Iluka is a perfect half-day stop or an overnight stay if you want to soak up the nature reserve and beaches. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the rainforest loop and the Bluff, then add another hour for a beach walk or the ferry crossing. If you’re in the area for a longer self-drive, consider staying a night – the town has a handful of holiday parks and B&Bs that offer a peaceful base.
