Iluka is a sleepy coastal village at the mouth of the Clarence River, where the river meets the sea in a swirl of sand and surf. It’s the quieter, more laid-back neighbour of Yamba, with a raw natural beauty that feels a world away from the crowds. The centrepiece is the Iluka Nature Reserve, a stunning pocket of littoral rainforest that’s recognised as a World Heritage site. For travellers on a self-drive itinerary along the North Coast, Iluka offers a chance to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and explore one of the most significant coastal rainforest remnants in New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Iluka Nature Reserve – Walk the short Rainforest Loop to see towering bangalow palms, strangler figs and ancient trees; keep an eye out for flying foxes and colourful wrens. The reserve is a biodiversity hotspot and a serene escape.
- Iluka Bluff – Head to this headland for panoramic views of the coastline, the Clarence River mouth and across to Yamba. It’s a prime spot for whale watching during migration season (June–November).
- Iluka Beach – A long, sweeping beach ideal for long walks, beach fishing and picnics. The southern end is patrolled in summer and offers calm swimming, while the northern end is more exposed.
- Iluka Ferry – Take the free vehicular cable ferry across the Clarence River to Yamba – it’s a charming little crossing that saves a long drive and gives a taste of river life.
- Bundjalung National Park – Just south of town, this park protects coastal heath, wetlands and the Jerusalem Creek walk. It’s great for birdwatching and spotting kangaroos at dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Iluka is a perfect half-day stop or an overnight stay if you want to soak up the nature reserve and beaches. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the rainforest loop and the Bluff, then add another hour for a beach walk or the ferry crossing. If you’re in the area for a longer self-drive, consider staying a night – the town has a handful of holiday parks and B&Bs that offer a peaceful base.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
