Hervey Bay, a tranquil coastal haven in Queensland, is world-renowned as the whale-watching capital of Australia. Every winter and spring, humpback whales migrate here to rest and play in the calm, protected waters of the bay, offering some of the most intimate and extended whale encounters on the planet. The town itself is laid-back and family-friendly, with a relaxed pace that invites you to linger between trips on the water.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale-watching cruises – The main event. Several operators run half-day tours from the Urangan Boat Harbour, with expert guides and hydrophones to listen to whale songs. Boats are stable and comfortable, and sightings are virtually guaranteed.
- Fraser Island (K'gari) – Visible from the bay, this World Heritage sand island is a must-do for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear lakes, and ancient rainforests. Combine a whale-watching trip with a day on the island.
- Urangan Pier – Stroll out over the bay on this historic, 868-metre-long pier for panoramic views and a chance to spot dolphins, turtles, and rays in the water below.
- Reefworld Aquarium – A small but educational aquarium that showcases the marine life of the Great Sandy Strait, including seahorses, jellyfish, and baby sharks – perfect for a rainy afternoon.
- Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens – A peaceful escape with lush lawns, a Japanese garden, and free barbecues. Great for a picnic before or after your cruise.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three nights in Hervey Bay. A typical itinerary: arrive and settle in, then dedicate a full morning to a whale-watching cruise (4–5 hours), leaving the afternoon free for the pier or gardens. A second day can be used for a Fraser Island tour or a leisurely exploration of the town. The whale season runs from July to November, with peak sightings in August and September.
