Stretching along a wild, windswept stretch of the New South Wales coast between South West Rocks and Port Macquarie, Hat Head National Park is a sanctuary of dramatic headlands, pristine beaches and coastal heath. This is a place where the bush meets the sea in a riot of colour and texture, with walking trails that deliver sweeping ocean views, hidden coves and a sense of isolation that feels a world away from the holiday crowds. It’s a gem for nature lovers, birdwatchers and anyone who craves a proper coastal adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Smoky Cape Lighthouse: Perched on a granite headland, this historic lighthouse (completed in 1891) offers panoramic views over the ocean and hinterland. The short walk here is a must, especially around sunrise or sunset.
- Hat Head Beach: A long, sweeping stretch of sand backed by dunes and heath – perfect for a solitary stroll, fishing or just soaking up the raw coastal energy. Swimming is best at the patrolled southern end.
- Korogoro Point walking track: A 4.5km return trail that weaves through coastal heath and forest, with lookouts over Korogoro Creek and the chance to spot whales (June–November) and sea eagles.
- Connors and Gap beaches: These remote, unpatrolled beaches are accessed via short walks from the main road – ideal for a quiet picnic or a spot of beachcombing.
- Birdwatching: The park is a haven for birdlife, including the endangered little tern, plus honeyeaters, robins and raptors. Bring binoculars.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can get a good taste of Hat Head National Park in a half-day, focusing on the Smoky Cape Lighthouse walk and a dip at Hat Head Beach. For a more immersive experience, set aside a full day to explore the longer walking trails, picnic by Korogoro Creek and watch the sun set over the ocean. The park is best visited as a day trip from Port Macquarie or South West Rocks, but keen bushwalkers might want to camp overnight at the basic camping area near Hat Head village.
